"First the word and then the music, from Monteverdi to Stephen Sondheim"

We will consider questions such as the following:

  • How do we go from singing to the scene?
  • How is a body that sings in stage material organized?
  • How can this stage material guide and open us to new technical-vocal resources?
  • What relationship or commitment do we have to style? Do we have to make technical sacrifices?
  • Are we aware of the technical resources common to some musical styles?

These and other questions are what we will consider in these masterclasses. We will work based on the student's level and their interests. We will emphasize the Italian, German and French baroque repertoire (XVII-XVIII) by authors such as: Monteverdi, Cavalli, Caccini, Frescobaldi, Scarlatti, Handel, Bach, Buxtehude, Telemann, Luly, Rameau… classical repertoire: Mozart, Gluck, others. Lederistic repertoire (in any language) and obviously all that musical theater repertoire from its creation to the present day.

Until 2003, Sabata was on the Catalan theater scene collaborating with companies such as Teatre Lliure, Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, but also the smaller Musical or General Elèctrica d'Espectacles. In 2004 Sabata made his debut at the Lyon Opera and from there his professional activity focused on the operatic discipline. In 2005 Sabata was selected by William Christie to participate in the Le jardin des Voix project which took him on a world tour that placed him on the international opera scene. Sabata has recorded a long list of operas and solo CDs, mainly of baroque music, but he also made the first recording of Schubert's Winterreise sung by a countertenor. Sabata is known for his theatrical approach to singing. Despite his commitment and passion for singing, after 28 years of experience on stage, first as an actor and the last 20 years as an opera singer, Sabata faces new horizons such as that of directing operatic stage. Among his professional commitments for this season, it is worth noting his return to the Vienna Opera, his debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the recording of Monteverdi's Vespers, the presentation of Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire at the Teatro Real de Madrid (conducted and performed by Sabata), the presentation of Schubert's Winterreise in a stage version at the Opera de la Monnaie in Brussels, directed by Rafael Villalobos, a tour of Germany with the Kebyart saxophone quartet or the production from Handel's oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo ed il Disiganno at the Handel Festival in Göttingen.
