EÓLIA EMERGING SCENE 2025

MARTIN TORRAS

Two young reporters from a public radio station are launching a program and the job opportunity they have been waiting for for so long. IT IS UNKNOWN TO KNOW, their historical outreach podcast is a success as it tells their family history. A success that will, in a way, confront them as well.

In the 1980s, the Rodríguez i Savalls family (the “i” is very important, indicating that they come from a good family) is faced with the youth of their daughters. The eldest, Olga, is a member of a left-wing party with her partner and best friend; Maria, the middle one, browses the lively bars of the Barcelona underground where she meets Júlia, her future partner; and Irina (who does not grow up) is a witness to the comings and goings of her sisters, their nighttime escapades, their mistakes and their successes.

The Transition ends and with it the revolutionary ideals. The arrival of AIDS in Spain wreaks havoc among the LGBT population and tensions within the family increase. Irina will see the fall from grace of Olga's party and how Maria will be repudiated by her family, when she starts working in a hospital that treats HIV patients.

NO SE SUE NEVER KNOWS, shows us the Barcelona of the eighties, and that of the present. A mix of precariousness and ladyboys, of people who care and people who rebel, a city where the "bolleres", the transvestites, the ladies of Gràcia and the divas of Paral·lel fit in, with bars full of the most peculiar characters who teach you the best lessons in life, and those people you want to have by your side in your last moments.

ADDRESS NOTE

“No es pot saber” is much more than a creative musical, it is a musical which puts the focus in the city of Barcelona, and in the social struggles that existed at the end of the dictatorship. He does this from comedy and also from drama, winking at two generations that challenge each other on and off the stage.

Mario Rebugent's funny and poignant plot, wrapped in the wonderful music and emotional songs of Núria Llausí, acts as a bridge between performers, the true driving forces behind the project, and the artistic team, speaking about two eras that both know firsthand and serve to connect these two worlds.

In this blank sheet that is post-dictatorship Barcelona, we draw the yearnings of the Barcelona counterculture of the 70s and contrast them with the desired and normative acceptance of a naive Democracy that was built on the foundations of Francoism. This musical is a tribute to a generation of gays and lesbians who were beginning to fight against discrimination and homophobia, when they were still persecuted by the greys. A brave and silenced generation that suffered and fought firmly against the AIDS epidemic.

There are those who believe that the progress made by the LGBTI+ community within Catalan society has been more than significant over the last 40 years. The focus now is on the next 40 years. This is where we will see if definitive steps are taken to eradicate LGBTI-phobia.
