MASTER'S IN MUSICAL THEATER CREATION

El Music Workshop i Eòlia Superior Center of Dramatic Art, join in a collaboration agreement to create the Master in Musical Theater Creation. The degree offers performers, composers, directors and playwrights the opportunity to deepen the tools that interrelate music and theater and to understand the theoretical and structural mechanisms of the genre. It has a teaching team made up of active professionals specializing in the subject.

The Master's can be taken in whole or in part.

Objectives

El Master in Musical Theater Creation aims to provide students who enroll with specialized tools for the creation and performance of original and home-produced musicals, and to promote cooperation between professionals.

It is a university-level master's degree where you deepen the essential knowledge to write a musical, with eminently practical subjects. In addition, it enriches and complements the students' abilities and skills in order to enhance their creativity, expression and interpretation.

The master's degree provides the necessary pedagogical structure in order to investigate the field of musical theater in theoretical depth; prepare, produce and create shows of this genre; expand contemporary artistic, academic and technical training; and the approach in the use of new technologies applied to the scene.

In the Master's in Musical Theater Creation, the genre is analyzed from a historical point of view in order to understand the aesthetic decisions that were made when creating the great works admired today. It also analyzes the sources of inspiration of the great masters, a fundamental exercise that helps students find their own genuine, personal and non-transferable way of doing things.

The structure of the master's degree is made up of weekly subjects (History of musical theatre, representative composers, workshop on song lyrics, the study of dramaturgy, pre-production of a musical, applied technology, composition and deconstruction of songs...) and, also a series of master classes given by active professionals: Antoni Font-Mir, Nina, Àngel Llàcer and Manu Guix, Jordi Sellas, Ariadna Peya and Andreu Gallén, Anna Rosa Cisquella, among others.

The Master in Music Theater Creationl has a specialized bibliography for consultation. The master's degree is a meeting point between professionals interested in the genre, a space for dialogue between creators and a place where we can improve our musical studies.

SUBJECTS

Theoretical journey through the evolution of the genre. The historical context goes hand in hand with the artistic contributions of the genre. The historical context marks the evolution of the arts.

Study of the evolution of the genre from its origins to the present day, delving into the structure-skeleton that supports each analyzed work. Special attention is paid to the elaboration of the dramaturgy that will make up the master's thesis.

Study and analysis of the most representative composers of musical theatre. Research, systematization and practice of musical style and song type. Contributions and innovations.

Study of the mechanisms of song lyrics in musical theatre. Analysis of letter structures. Types of songs and their function within the musical. Spotting the songs. Analysis of the structure of classical musical theatre. Rhetorical figures.

Composition exercises based on models from different periods. Transcription of specific fragments to be able to break down, study and modify to enhance creativity. Construction of melodies following the model of various composers.

Analysis of the form and construction of a song and its function within a show. Adaptation of interpretation taking into account context, time and style. Work on songs from a practical side to understand how to help a performer achieve professional excellence. Transversal subject where the way to stage a song is considered from different perspectives (interpretation, music and direction).

Panoramic view of the technologies involved in the current contemporary scene, where different languages ​​are hybridized.

Masterclasses taught by professionals linked to the world of production, the stage, councillorship, composition, direction and management of theaters and equipment. Development of a journal of the acquired knowledge, with the monitoring of a tutor.

Presentation of the basic production lines of a musical. We work from the pre-production phase until the beginning of the materialization of the idea.

Elaboration of the libretto and the score of a creative musical. Through working groups, the performers, directors and playwrights prepare the libretto and the lyrics of the songs. Instrumentalists and composers build the musical structure. Presentation of the creation in dramatized reading format. The whole process is supervised by a tutor.

This curricular experience is assessed in a personalized interview and helps us decide your suitability. Remember that this is not an initiation.

Temps. Writing a musical (the one proposed in the Master's Final Project) involves many hours of dedication. The first part of the Master, for example, offers a theoretical framework with many practical exercises to understand the history of musical theatre, the most representative composers of the genre, give tools to structure the libretto of the musical that we will write, understand how the lyrics of songs and melodies are organized. This will require many hours of work at home. Every week you will have to write lyrics of songs, melodic lines of songs, songs... If you see that you do many activities during the day and do not have time to dedicate yourself to the Master, we recommend that you wait until you have time to sign up for it.

Not necessarily, but it will be easier for you if you know some. In the Master's there are two core subjects: Composers of the genre i Composition which place a lot of emphasis on the musical part. Harmony, orchestration, modes… If all this is completely unknown to you, you will probably feel lost. Remember that the Master is mainly aimed at licensed musicians, composers and musical theater actors (We assume that you will have minimal musical training if this is the case.) If you are a playwright, we will most likely recommend that you take a course as an audience member.

It is not essential., but you will do very well because most of the material we have is not translated. Consider that within the tasks of the first part of the course we view a lot of material and analyze letters in the language in which they were written.

The Taller de Músics and the EÒLIA Center for Dramatic Art are committed to a Master's degree that promotes the creation of musical theater in CatalanIt is not essential that you speak Catalan, but it is important that you are clear that the classes will be taught in this language.

You can register as a listener.Listeners only have the option of attending the subjects ofHistory of musical theatre, Dramaturgy of Musical 1, Lyrics Workshop 1 and Representative composers of the genre, Song direction and the master classes. Composition It is a subject that can only be taken by students enrolled in the entire Master's degree.

YesIt is important because the level of demand is high and the age involved in having completed higher education presupposes a certain intellectual maturity. As a listener you can attend in classes and it is the teacher's discretion to let you participate more or less in the subject.

We would love to be able to answer yes, but right now, the type of practical work we do and the interaction between students and teachers makes it very difficult to follow online classes. The Master lasts one year divided into two semesters.

Indeed, we are class Tuesday and the Wednesday during the morning so that you can combine training with your work. It is important that you reserve Thursday mornings because we periodically hold master classes with professionals in the sector that we think are interesting for you to meet: creators, producers, performers, composers, lawyers specializing in intellectual property rights, etc.

The objective of the Master is write a musical. Have a booklet with the scores of the songs ready to begin the pre-production process. Once the Master is finished we do what is called a backer audition where we invite people from the world of production so you have the opportunity to show them the material.

Taking advantage of the opportunity that the Eòlia school, one of the promoters of the Master, is a Higher Center of Dramatic Art, we offer the possibility for students to help you in this small presentation that you will have to design. You will have about 30” to present your project and show the songs and/or scenes. Don't worry, in the subject of Song direction We will help you design this presentation.
