Assistant management is a job that no one has ever taught me and I have always missed this first apprenticeship before entering a job without knowing exactly what my role was. When I'm asked what I do as an assistant, I always say, "I need to know everything that's going on."

This course was born from the desire to share my experience on assistant management, after 12 years of working in this profession and knowing assemblies and directions of all kinds, in order to give a first base of knowledge to all those people who have an interest in the profession, and want to get closer to the experience of being an assistant director. We will talk about rehearsal preparation, calendars and planning, communication with management and other departments, room entry and assembly, and we will raise various issues or situations that we may encounter within the help.

We will divide the course into the various phases that an assistant director has to face in an assembly:

  • Pre-essays (What will we do and what will we need?): Planning, how to read a text, how to analyze the elements in order to make a first forecast of needs, creative team meetings. Table work phase.
  • Plan a rehearsal forecast based on scenes, characters, play length, etc.
  • Exhibition of the different departments of the theatrical assembly and first situations that we could find before the rehearsals.
  • The essays: Practical phase. The roles within an essay. The art departments.
  • How do I communicate with the director? What do you need from me?
  • Entrance to the hall: The elements and concepts of entrance to the hall and the assembly.
  • We are going to see a montage that is being done during July in Barcelona

Texts from which we will work: Night of the Kings (Shakespeare), Falsestuff (Nao Albet and Marcel Borràs), The Boy in the Last Row (Juan Mayorga), Angels in America (Tony Kushner), Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky), among others.
